Diversity CRNA Journey...Past & Present!
Devon Locust, CRNA, MSN graduated Wayne State University Nurse Anesthesia Program 2013.
As a marginalized critical care nurse and respiratory therapist snd Army Sergeant, he attended a Diversity CRNA 2010 Information Session & Airway Sim Lab Workshop, Respiratory Therapist. Immediately, he aas Introduced to Black male CRNAs from across the country.
In 2011, Devon was the only Black male nurse anesthesia student in his cohort with 2.3% Black CRNAs. Hence, making a conscious decision to introduce him to Black men CRNAs. Today, there are 4% Black CRNAs out of a 70K Nurse Anesthesia workforce.
This is the Immersion Model for Diversifying Nurse Anesthesia Programs at it’s very best!

Each year, the Nurses Alumni Association (NAA) honors alumni and friends who are committed to the key values and missions of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing (NHWSN) and NAA.
Recent Graduate Award is awarded to a NHWSN graduate from the past ten years who has contributed exceptional service to the NHWSN Alumni Association, the School of Nursing, and/or to the profession of nursing. The individual’s contributions to the nursing profession may be in one or more nursing practice specialties: research, education, clinical practice, management/leadership, public health and/or community service.

This is only the beginning of Joseph Alexander Nurse Anesthesia journey as a CRNA
In 2019, as a critical care nurse, Joseph attended and actively participated at the Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop at Augusta University.
In 2022, Joseph Alexander CRNA graduated from Florida State University Panama City Nurse Anesthesia Program.
In October 2024, he served as a CRNA preceptor at the Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at Fairfield University. A truly full circle moment.
As per Joseph:
